Adi Kailash Yatra Trek Overview
Adi Kailash and Om Parvat are two sacred Himalayan peaks located in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, India, close to the Indo-Tibet border. Though distinct from Mount Kailash in Tibet (considered the original “Kailash”), both Adi Kailash and Om Parvat hold deep spiritual and cultural significance, especially in Hinduism. They are often visited together as part of the Adi Kailash Yatra, a pilgrimage that has been gaining popularity due to improved accessibility in recent years.
Adi kailash and Om Parvat Key Highlights
Adi Kailash (Chhota Kailash)
- Adi Kailash, also known as Chhota Kailash, is believed to be a replica of Mount Kailash in Tibet, the mythical abode of Lord Shiva. It is located near the Indian village of Kuti, in the Kinnaur district, and is part of the Vyas Valley in the Kumaon Himalayas.
- The peak resembles Mount Kailash and stands at an altitude of approximately 6,191 meters (20,312 feet). Near Adi Kailash is a sacred Parvati Sarovar (Gauri Kund), a serene, glacial lake where devotees offer prayers. The entire area is surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, including snow-capped peaks, lush meadows, and vibrant cultural villages like Gunji, Kuti, and Nabi.
- It is said that Lord Shiva and Parvati meditated here, and many devotees undertake the yatra as a spiritual alternative to the original Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which is more difficult and currently restricted due to international borders.
Om Parvat
- Om Parvat is a nearby peak famous for the naturally formed “ॐ” (Om) symbol on its snow-covered face. This miraculous formation is visible only during clear weather and draws pilgrims, trekkers, and spiritual seekers alike.
- Om Parvat stands at an elevation of around 6,191 meters (20,312 feet), like Adi Kailash, and can be seen from Nabhidhang, a point along the Lipulekh Pass route. The Om symbol, formed by snow deposits and black rock, is considered a divine manifestation and is revered as a sacred sighting (darshan).
- Though no climbing is involved in seeing Om Parvat, reaching the viewing point requires a challenging journey through remote mountainous terrain, often by 4×4 vehicles or moderate treks.
Spiritual and Cultural Significance
- di Kailash is considered one of the Panch Kailash — the five sacred abodes of Lord Shiva (others include Mount Kailash in Tibet, Shrikhand Mahadev, Kinnaur Kailash, and Manimahesh Kailash).
- The region is dotted with ancient temples, caves, and legends, particularly tied to the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
- Local traditions and folklore play a big role, and the area is home to the Byansi tribal communities, who have deep cultural ties to the region.

As the journey progresses, travelers will witness a series of spiritually and mythologically important peaks, each with its own legend. These include Kunti Parvat, Pandav Fort, Brahma Parvat, Pandav Parvat, and Parvati Mukut—all connected to stories from the Mahabharata and Hindu scriptures. These snow-capped peaks add to the divine atmosphere of the region, making the drive not just scenic but also deeply symbolic.
Once at Jyolingkong, the group will continue on foot for about 3 to 4 kilometers to visit the serene and holy Parvati Lake, also known as Gauri Kund. This glacial lake, nestled beneath Adi Kailash, is believed to be where Goddess Parvati bathed. The crystal-clear waters reflect the surrounding peaks, offering a surreal and peaceful setting. Pilgrims often take a holy dip in the sacred lake and collect holy water in bottles to take back home, believing it brings blessings and purification.
